And the greatest threat to bring these economic powerhouses to a screeching halt is lack of transportation funding.

They lie at opposite ends of the state, but you can see the impact of Washington Dulles and the Port of Virginia in every town, every city, every corner of the state.

Hundreds of thousands of travel and cargo-related jobs.

Billions of dollars in commercial and consumer spending.

Billions more in property and income tax revenue paid to state and local government.

All directly or indirectly tied to Washington Dulles International airport and the Port of Virginia.

Unlike some of their most potent competitors on the eastern seaboard, both the Port and Washington Dulles are poised for tremendous growth and new economic opportunity for the Commonwealth.

Yet with no funding to improve and expand the highway network they depend on, both are likely to become stuck in park.

It’s an issue as important to Reston as it is to Roanoke.

As crucial to Hampton and Harrisonburg as it is for Suffolk and the Shenandoah Valley.

Direct flights from Washington Dulles link the state of Virginia to 80 % of the world’s gross international product.

It’s that kind of global reach that spurred Northern Virginia's booming information technology corridor.

Today, there is as much commercial space within 30 minutes of Dulles as there is in lower and midtown Manhattan combined.

Two hundred miles to the south and just 18 miles from the open ocean, the Port of Virginia’s three marine terminals in Norfolk, Newport News and Portsmouth transport more intermodal containers to more cities than any other port in the nation.

Inter-modal rail service transports ocean-going containers to Virginia Inland Port in the Shenandoah Valley, some 220 miles on shore.

So it’s no surprise that more than 50 major retailers have built major inland distribution centers along the state’s major highways, bringing good, solid jobs and millions of dollars in annual tax revenue to cities and towns all across Virginia.

Combined, Washington Dulles International airport and the Port of Virginia are directly or indirectly responsible for 375,000 jobs throughout the Commonwealth and $895 Million and tax revenue equal to 6% of the entire state general fund.

No matter where you live in Virginia, you enjoy the economic benefit of Dulles International airport and the Port of Virginia.

But the best port facilities in the world are only as good as the roads that serve them. The more congestion, the more it costs all Virginians in jobs, in money, and future opportunity.
