The 2012 Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee

The 2012 Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee was broadcast live on WHRO-TV15.1 on Saturday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m. WHRO-FM’s Raymond Jones once again served as the Bee’s pronouncer. Forty of the finest area middle school spellers were in the studio competing for this year’s title.

Public middle schools in southeastern Virginia sending their school champions included: Hickory, Jolliff and Western Branch, Chesapeake; Joseph P. King, Franklin; Norview and Ruffner Academy, Norfolk; Southampton, Southampton; John F. Kennedy, Suffolk; and Corporate Landing, Independence, Kemps Landing Magnet, Kempsville, Landstown , Larkspur, Plaza, Princess Anne, and Virginia Beach Middle, Virginia Beach.

Public middle school champs from northeastern North Carolina Public Schools competing included students from: Moyock, Currituck County; Ahoskie, Hertford County and Riverview, Hertford County; Elizabeth City and River Road, Elizabeth City-Pasquotank; and Central Middle School, Gates County.

Independent Schools participating were Atlantic Shores Christian School; Cape Henry Collegiate; Faith Academy School Of Excellence; Greenbrier Christian Academy; Isle Of Wight Academy; Nansemond Suffolk Academy; Norfolk Christian Upper School; Norfolk Collegiate School; Portsmouth Catholic Regional School; St. Gregory's School; St. John The Apostle Catholic School; St. Patrick Catholic School; and Stonebridge School. Homeschool Associations included: Albemarle Homeschool League and KEYS

The winners of the 2012 Virginia-Pilot Spelling Bee were:

  • First Place, Caroline Willett, KEYS Homeschool Association
  • Second Place, Alexander Blakley, Cape Henry Collegiate School
  • Third Place, LaParia Speight, Hertford County Middle School

The first, second and third place winners received trophies from the Virginian-Pilot. The Virginian-Pilot also pays the first place winner’s travel expenses to go to Washington, DC and compete in the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee in June. WHRO presented the first place winner with an Apple iPad.
